For Solo Cello and Piano
Performance Time 23:28
Skill Level: Advanced, Virtuoso

"Elegy is a major work, Carol. You are at the height of your powers but not the summit. The piece overflows with lyricism, drama, passion and beauty! It is a gift for both performers and listeners. You gave the soloist much to express, at one time pointing the way even as you allow freedom for deeply personal interpretation. Cellists and musicians will be drawn to such a rich work."
-Brad Keimach
Conductor, Protégé of Leonard Bernstein

"Powerful and deeply moving... Rich in emotion and imagery, the piece and performance are permanently woven into the fabric and soul of everyone present."
-Luther S. Luedtke
President, California Lutheran University

"Any listener can clearly follow the events in the music itself. This clarity enables a listener to release pent-up emotions. The early morning sun, the busy rush of Manhattan, the flames and fall of the towers, the prayers and emotional farewells, the new sunrise -- I could hear it all, with a simplicity (yet richness of sonority) and a power rare in contemporary music."
-Professor Dr. Ian Hall

Carol recalls her feelings as she composed Elegy:

"When I wrote it, the score was dotted with tears but I chose not to use where my tears fell on the music paper, even though the tears fell between the lines like notes and it would have been so Camp to use those and create a tune made of tears.  But I used only those notes that came from my heart and ears, not from my eyes."

Elegy was World-premiered by Cellist Joyce Geeting and Concert Pianist Robert Sage at St. Martin-in-The-Fields on March 18th, 2003. The work, commissioned by Ms. Geeting, is an offering of love and healing written in the aftermath of September 11th. 'Elegy' begins with the innocence of early morning and ends with the sunrise of the following day. 'Elegy' is both a tribute to those lost and a healing work for those left behind. The work has since been performed numerous times since its premiere. 'Elegy' is currently being orchestrated by the composer into a symphony-length full orchestra Cello Concerto.

"Love is never really lost,
courage is never really in vain and
there will always be a new sunrise.
"
-From the Frontispiece of Elegy
(as written by the composer)
